What invoice OCR does
Invoice OCR starts with an existing supplier PDF, scan or photo. It identifies fields such as supplier, invoice number, date, totals and line items and turns them into structured data. An accounting workflow may then match that data to supplier, stock-item or GL codes, show it for review, and deliver an entry to accounting software.
This is mainly an incoming-document productivity problem: someone has received a document and wants to avoid typing it again.
What LHDN e-Invoice does
Malaysia’s e-Invoice process concerns structured transaction data submitted to and validated through LHDN’s MyInvois system. Accounting products may provide functions for submission, status tracking, cancellation, consolidated e-Invoices and self-billed e-Invoices.
This is mainly a tax compliance and validation problem. The relevant rules, implementation dates and transaction treatment should be checked against current LHDN guidance and your accounting or tax adviser.
Why a business may need both
A supplier may send your accounts team a PDF invoice even when transaction data also exists in an e-Invoice system. Your operational problem can still include collecting the document, matching it to the right supplier and purchase category, keeping the original available, and creating the correct entry in SQL Account or AutoCount Cloud.
| Question | Invoice OCR | LHDN e-Invoice |
|---|---|---|
| Starting point | PDF, scan or photo | Structured transaction data |
| Main purpose | Capture and prepare accounting data | Submission and validation for tax administration |
| Typical user action | Review extracted fields and codes | Submit, validate and manage e-Invoice status |
| beres scope | Supported workflow | Not provided |
Where beres stops
beres collects supplier documents by email or Telegram, extracts and matches data, supports review, and delivers approved entries to SQL Account or AutoCount Cloud. It does not submit to MyInvois, validate LHDN e-Invoices or claim to make a business tax compliant.
Your accounting system remains responsible for the e-Invoice functions it provides. Keep the two jobs distinct when evaluating software, asking for a demo or writing an internal procedure.
A practical decision test
- If staff are retyping fields from supplier PDFs, investigate invoice capture and accounting automation.
- If staff need to submit or validate transaction data with LHDN, investigate the current e-Invoice functions in the accounting system.
- If both occur, map them as separate steps with a clear hand-off and no duplicate posting.
